TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that the Indonesian Consulate General in Houston has secured access to communicate with Indonesian citizens detained during a recent US immigration raid at the Hyundai plant in Georgia.
“The Indonesian Consulate General in Houston has obtained consular access to communicate with CHT on September 8, 2025 (Georgia, USA time),” said Judha Nugraha, Director of Indonesian Citizens Protection and Legal Aid (PWNI) at the ministry, when contacted by Antara in Jakarta on Monday, September 8, 2025.
Judha added that the PWNI Directorate of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will hold a meeting with PT HLI Green Power to discuss the apprehension of the Indonesian workers.
He explained that the individual is an employee of PT HLI Green Power who was in a meeting with Hyundai officials when the raid occurred.
PT Hyundai LG Industry (HLI) Green Power is a joint venture between Hyundai Motor Group and LG Energy Solution that produces batteries for electric vehicles (EVs) in Indonesia. The company’s plant is located in Karawang, West Java, and is the first and largest EV battery plant in Southeast Asia.
Prior to this, the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that an Indonesian worker with the initials CHT was apprehended by US immigration authorities (ICE) at the Hyundai electric vehicle plant in Georgia on Thursday.
Judha stated, “CHT had a 1-month business trip plan in the US and was equipped with a passport, visa, and an invitation from the company.”
A total of 475 people, including South Korean nationals, were arrested and detained during the US immigration authorities’ raid at the electric vehicle plant, a joint venture between Hyundai and LG, namely Hyundai Metaplant in Ellabell, Georgia, according to authorities on Friday.
The operation involved several US agencies, including ICE, Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), the FBI, Customs and Border Patrol, the Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives Bureau (ATF), the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), and US Marshals.
