TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Secretary of the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs, Susiwijono Moegiarso, has commented on the series of protests that took place in several locations the past few days until Friday, August 29, 2025. He hopes that the demonstrations remain peaceful to avoid disrupting economic stability.
Especially now that the government is pushing for economic growth in the third quarter of 2025. "We only have September left," he said on Friday.
The Ministry of Economic Affairs, along with other ministries and institutions, has prepared various instruments to drive economic growth. "Hopefully the situation remains conducive today as well. Because we hope that with only a month left, we can push it (the economic growth)," said one of Minister Airlangga Hartarto's staff.
Susi also commented on the decline in the IDX Composite (IHSG) due to today's rally, confirming that it contributes to the decline.
"I think the market already has its own mechanism to respond to it," he said. As is known, the IHSG dropped 2 percent to around 7,771 at the close of the first trading session on Friday afternoon.
The protests continued today, after a ride-share driver was run over by a police mobile brigade vehicle on late Thursday.
The demonstrators besieged the Mobile Brigade Headquarters in Kwitang, Central Jakarta, from morning until evening. They demanded that the police take responsibility for Affan's death.
At around 03:00 p.m. local time, the protest grew heated, with the police firing several shots of tear gas canisters at the crowd, forcing them to disperse.
Meanwhile, people also gathered at the gates of the Jakarta Metro Police.
One of the shopping centers in the area, Lippo Mall Nusantara, was observed to have ceased operations since 04:00 p.m. Barbed wire fences were installed at the entrance of Lippo Mall on Gatot Subroto street. "For now, the mall is closed," said one of the security guards to Tempo.
