Indonesian Minister Floats Idea to Place National Police Force Under Ministry Responsibility

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Coordinating Minister for Legal, Human Rights, Immigration, and Corrections, Yusril Ihza Mahendra, floats the opportunity to change the Indonesian National Police's position within the government structure. The police are now working under the direct auspices of the Indonesian President.

Yusril said the civil residents are allowed to propose a repositioning of the Polri institution. "The civilians are welcome to discuss and debate (the repositioning of Polri) academically, and we consider it as a contribution of ideas," said Yusril in his statement on Monday, October 20, 2025.

According to Yusril, such ideas can be proposed through the Police Reform Commission, which will be formed by President Prabowo Subianto. "To discuss the best structure for the police force within the government," said Yusril.

Yusril said it is possible for the Indonesian National Police to be working under an existing ministry or even form a new Ministry nomenclature. "Feel free to discuss it, and President Prabowo will make the decision," said Yusril.

According to Yusril, the change in Polri structure under the government is the authority of President Prabowo, together with the House of Representatives. "We leave it to him, and I believe the best decision will be made," said Yusril.

Yusril mentioned that talks about police force repositioning emerged after Prabowo decided to form the Police Reform Commission. According to him, the plan requires further review and discussions; thus, he asked citizens to patiently await the commission's establishment.

"I believe it will be announced soon enough," said Yusril.

State Secretary Minister Prasetyo Hadi previously mentioned that the government is still waiting for the right time to inaugurate the Police Reform Commission. "Some of the members who will join the Police Reform Commission have prior engagements," said Prasetyo on Friday, October 10, 2025, adding that the commission will consist of nine members.

Some of those confirmed to join include Yusril Ihza Mahendra, representing the government, as well as former Coordinating Minister of Political and Legal Affairs Mahfud MD, and former Constitutional Justice Jimly Asshiddiqie.
