Israel Claims Accidental Fire Killed Children Waiting for Water in Gaza

1 month ago 19

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Israeli military stated that the attack near a water distribution point in Gaza that reportedly killed six children on Sunday was an accident. They referred to the incident as an unintentional occurrence caused by a technical malfunction.

A total of 10 people, including six children, were killed in Nuseirat on Sunday after an Israeli attack while they were queuing for water near Nuseirat, according to hospital officials. The Israeli military said the shooting was a "technical mistake."

According to Euronews, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said they were targeting Islamic Jihad militants. However, a technical problem caused the ammunition to miss its target by several meters.

The IDF added that the incident is under review and there are casualties in the area. Israel regretted any civilian casualties not involved in the matter.

Separately, emergency health officials said the Israeli attack hit a group of people walking on the street on Sunday afternoon in downtown Gaza City. The attack killed 11 people and injured about 30 others.

In Zawaida, an Israeli attack on a house killed nine people, including three children, according to the hospital official from Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital. Al-Awda Hospital said an attack on a group of people in Zawaida killed two individuals.

The Israeli military stated that they were not aware of the attack on the house. Israeli attacks hit more than 150 targets in the last 24 hours. Among them were weapon storage facilities, missile launchers, and sniper positions.

Israel blamed Hamas for civilian casualties as the militant group operated in densely populated areas.

Negotiations between Israel and Hamas for a ceasefire in Gaza reached a deadlock. The negotiations aimed to secure the release of hostages and deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza. One of the contentious points debated was whether Israeli forces should remain deployed during the battle pause.

Israel stated it would end the war after Hamas surrendered, disarmed, and left Gaza. Hamas rejected Israel's demands. Hamas said it was willing to release the remaining 50 hostages, 20 of whom are reportedly still alive. The release of the hostages was contingent on the end of the war and a full withdrawal of Israeli forces.
