TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Spain recalled its ambassador to Tel Aviv on Monday after the Israeli government accused Madrid of antisemitism and banned two Spanish ministers from entering Israel.

Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares recalled the ambassador after "facing slanderous accusations and unacceptable actions towards two government members," according to a source cited by the Spanish daily El Pais as reported by Anadolu.

Several hours earlier, Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez announced nine measures aimed at halting what he called Israel's genocide in Gaza.

The measures included a permanent arms embargo, a ban on imports from occupied territories, and a ban on individuals involved in the Gaza war from entering Spain.

This marks a new low in relations due to the genocidal attacks in Gaza, which have killed over 64,000 Palestinian citizens, mostly women and children, and destroyed the besieged enclave since October 2023.

As reported by Daily Sabah, Sanchez, one of the harshest critics of Israel's military campaign, is the highest-ranking European leader to refer to the conflict as 'genocide.'

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar responded on US social media, calling Sanchez's government "antisemitic." Sa'ar then wrote: "Sanchez has dealt with the wrong people. The times of the Inquisition, persecution, and expulsion are over. Israel is a strong and sovereign state."

Sa'ar also said Israel will "inform its allies" about the hostile behavior of the Spanish government and the antisemitic and violent nature of the statements made by its ministers.

He then announced that Deputy Prime Minister Yolanda Diaz and Youth Minister Sira Rego would be banned from entering Israel.

"It's a matter of pride that a country committing genocide is barring me," Diaz responded.

Nevertheless, Spain condemned the shooting in Jerusalem that killed six people, including a Spanish citizen.
