TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - One of the main ships of Sumud Global Flotilla (GSF), known as the "Family Boat", was reportedly attacked by a drone off the coast of Tunisia, according to its organizers on Monday night as reported by TRT World.
The ship, sailing under the flag of Portugal, carried members of the GSF Steering Committee, which includes other activists, the fleet said in a statement uploaded on the US social media platform, Instagram.
"All passengers and crew are safe," the statement said on Monday night, adding, "An investigation is currently underway, and when further information is available, it will be released."
"Acts of aggression aimed at intimidating and derailing our mission will not deter us. Our peaceful mission to break the siege on Gaza and stand in solidarity with its people continues with determination and resolve," the statement added.
"A drone came right above it, released a bomb, and it exploded, and the boat was on fire," said Acar, a member of the steering committee, in a video message on Instagram.
The Sumud Global Flotilla, named after the Arabic word for "steadfastness", comprises 20 vessels carrying people from various countries, including doctors, journalists, and activists. Around 150 activists - including Tunisian citizens, Turkish nationals, and others from Europe, Africa, and Asia - are participating in this initiative.
The fleet set sail from Barcelona at the end of August, along with another group from Genoa, Italy, and is expected to depart from Tunisia to Gaza on Wednesday, September 10, 2025.
The initiative aims to challenge the Israeli blockade and send humanitarian aid to Gaza.
Genocide and Famine
The UN-supported Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) reported on August 22 that famine has struck northern Gaza and warned that famine could spread as the Israeli blockade continues.
Israel's genocide in Gaza entered its 700th day on Friday, with Israel having killed over 64,500 Palestinian citizens, mostly women and children.
During this genocide, Israel has razed much of the enclave to rubble, practically displacing its entire population.
Last November, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.
