TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Israeli military fired warning shots towards a group of diplomats from the European Union and Arab countries while visiting Jenin, a city in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, according to the Palestinian Authority on Wednesday, May 21, 2025, as reported by Sweden Herald. About 20 diplomats were on an official mission to observe the humanitarian situation in Jenin when the shots were heard.
"The occupation forces opened heavy fire from within the refugee camp in Jenin to intimidate the diplomatic delegation visiting the camp," wrote the Palestinian Authority in a statement, referring to the Israeli soldiers.
An aid worker, who requested anonymity for fear of reprisal, stated that a delegation consisting of around 20 regional, European, and Western diplomats was standing near the entrance of the Jenin refugee camp when they heard gunfire shortly before 2 p.m., even though it was unclear where the shots came from.
No one was injured, the witness said.
As reported by the Washington Times Herald, footage shows several diplomats giving media interviews when rapid gunfire is heard near the group, forcing them to run for cover.
EU Chief of Foreign Policy Kaja Kallas stated that firing warning shots, even if just warning shots, is unacceptable and called on Israel to investigate the incident.
The Israeli military confirmed the warning shots, which they claimed were fired after the diplomatic group "deviated" from the planned route.
The Israeli military then fired warning shots to steer the convoy away from the area. At the same time, they expressed regret for the "discomfort" caused to the diplomats.
The Israeli military apologized and promised to contact all relevant countries involved in the visit.
Italy and Spain, two countries with diplomats at the camp, demanded further explanation from Israel.
The Italian government under Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni also demanded an explanation, stating that their deputy consul was among those targeted by the shots.
