TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Israeli soldiers attacked and killed Palestinian residents who were trying to get water in the midst of Gaza, including children.
At least 10 Palestinian residents were killed at a water collection point in central Gaza, six of whom were children. Refugees were trying to get food and water supplies in Gaza, which is plagued by famine.
Israeli forces on Sunday killed at least 92 Palestinian residents, 52 of them in Gaza City, as they targeted residential areas and refugee camps throughout Gaza. According to Al Jazeera, the attack on the water distribution point at the Nuseirat refugee camp also injured 16 people. The water obtained by the refugees is often unfit to drink due to bacterial contamination.
Israel's intense bombing of Gaza killed at least 110 Palestinian residents on Saturday, including 34 people waiting for food at the distribution site of the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) supported by Israel and the United States in Rafah.
Since the GHF distributed food packages in Gaza at the end of May, nearly 800 Palestinian residents. GHF monopolizes the distribution of humanitarian aid in Gaza and sidelines other more efficient, well-organized, and trustworthy organizations, including the United Nations.
People had to make this dangerous journey from northern Gaza, from Gaza City to Rafah. They walked 12 to 15 km and took a full day. Some did it at night, sleeping in bombed-out buildings to get there as quickly as possible. In the midst of their hard efforts to get food, they were met with live ammunition and deliberate gunfire by Israeli forces.
A spokesman for the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) told NHK on Monday that the air attack on the children was unintentional. IDF claimed they were targeting Jihad Islamic terrorists.
They said a technical error caused the ammunition to fall tens of meters from the target. IDF admitted regret for the civilian casualties. The incident is under review.
Ahmed Abu Saifa, an emergency room doctor at the Al-Awda Hospital, said most of the injured were children and women.
UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell called for an immediate ceasefire. She wrote on social media that the Israeli military needs to protect civilians, including children, and ensure "full compliance" with international humanitarian law.
