Itaewon's Best Places to Shop: From Streets to Underground Markets

2 months ago 25

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Itaewon is one of the bustling tourist areas in Korea. Known for its multiculturalism and vibrant nightlife, this area offers a variety of restaurants and shopping centers. It's no wonder that many celebrities and expatriates live in this area.

Itaewon is Seoul's first special tourist area, designated in 1997. The area is a multicultural place inhabited by more than 20,000 foreigners and well-known among international tourists.

Quoted from Visit Korea, Itaewon began to be known worldwide in the 1980s when Korea hosted the 1986 Seoul Asian Games and the 1988 Seoul Olympics, as well as various international conferences. Since then, this area has become a popular tourist destination.

One of its attractions is a row of shops selling clothes and bags, hotels, entertainment facilities, and restaurants. This includes streets filled with furniture stores and antique shops. Here are the best shopping places in Itaewon:

1. Itaewon Shopping Street

According to Travel and Leisure Asia, Itaewon Shopping Street is located near Itaewon Station. This 1.4-kilometer area is filled with various shops, including those specialized in selling leather goods, luxury shoes, handicrafts, and trendy fashion. It also houses over 2,400 bars, boutiques, and entertainment centers.

In this area, there is an Antique Furniture Street with 80 to 100 stores selling antique and retro furniture, home decorations, and ceramics. For book enthusiasts, a must-visit is Itaewon Books, the oldest English-language used book store in Seoul. The store combines vintage charm and sustainability. Meanwhile, for those looking for unique souvenirs from Seoul, a visit to Joy Jewellery is essential.

2. Underground Market

From trendy Korean drama-style clothing to traditional Korean attire, the lively underground market in Itaewon offers a unique shopping experience. Besides shopping, visitors can interact with local traders and learn about traditional handicrafts. But don't forget to bring cash, as not all traders accept credit cards or online payments.

Among the famous stores is UNION Shop. It's not just a store, but a gateway to Korean culture, heritage, and fashion. Upon entering the store, visitors are welcomed by a variety of Hanbok (traditional Korean clothing) in various colors and patterns. Here, visitors can also learn various facts about Hanbok, including how to wear and arrange it, and even get help choosing the most suitable one.

Sportswear and athleisure brand Lululemon also has its largest store in South Korea in Itaewon. Outside of China, this store is the largest Lululemon store in all of Asia. It covers an area of 727 square meters and consists of two spacious floors.

Another shopping option is the Hamilton Shopping Mall, located just across Exit 1 of Itaewon Station. This shopping center offers a variety of cosmetic shops, accessories, shoes, and attractive clothing under one roof.

For design and decoration enthusiasts, a visit to Eastern One is a must. This two-story sculpture store offers glimpses of Korea's artistic heritage, from porcelain to contemporary sculptures. Make sure to visit on weekdays to avoid the crowds.
