TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung Wibowo has implemented a policy requiring all civil servants (https://en.tempo.co/tag/asn) in the capital to utilize public transportation. Specifically, he has directed government employees to commute via public transit every Wednesday.

Pramono stated that this policy has been formalized through a gubernatorial regulation. "We have signed a gubernatorial regulation that every Wednesday we will somewhat obligate all ASN in Jakarta to use public transportation," Pramono announced in a written statement on Thursday, April 24, 2025.

To further encourage compliance, the Jakarta Provincial Government will not provide official vehicle facilities to civil servants on Wednesdays. "So, we will not make Jakarta regional government-owned vehicles available on Wednesdays," explained the politician from the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle.

He noted that public transportation connectivity within the metropolitan area has reached 91 percent. He also indicated that ASN will soon be able to use public transportation services free of charge.

Previously, Pramono had mentioned that Jakarta Deputy Governor Rano Karno already uses public transportation one day a week to commute to his office at Jakarta City Hall. Rano travels from his home in Lebak Bulus, South Jakarta, to City Hall in Gambir, Central Jakarta, every Monday.

"Pak Deputy Governor routinely, every Monday, uses public transportation," Pramono stated at the Jakarta City Hall Bus Stop on Monday, April 21, 2025.

According to Pramono, promoting public transportation usage is one of the strategies to address Jakarta's congestion problem. He emphasized that the Jakarta Government is working to cultivate a habit of public transportation use among citizens by improving transportation infrastructure.

"If public transportation gets better, people will be willing to switch to it," said the former cabinet secretary during the administration of President Joko Widodo or Jokowi.

However, Pramono clarified that he does not currently use public transportation to commute to Jakarta City Hall like Rano Karno. "Currently, I reside in an official residence, which is nearby, so I do not need public transportation," he explained.
