TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Jakarta Metro Police launched a large-scale patrol on Sunday, August 31, 2025, following massive protests in the city.
The Head of Public Relations of Jakarta Metro Police, Grand Commissioner Ade Ary Syam Indradi, said hundreds of personnel are deployed for this patrol. "Involving 324 personnel from the National Police Headquarters and the Jakarta Metro Police," Ade said on Sunday afternoon, August 31, 2025.
Ade explained that the personnel would patrol three separate routes, with the first team moving from North Jakarta, then to East Jakarta, and ending in Central Jakarta.
Meanwhile, the second patrol team will sweep from West Jakarta to Central Jakarta and finally to South Jakarta. The third patrol team will be tasked with patrolling from South Jakarta to Depok.
Ade mentioned that the personnel havebeen equipped with necessary equipment for patrolling. "There are four-wheeled vehicles, two-wheeled vehicles, individual equipment, and communication kits," Ade told reporters.
Based on Tempo's observations, the patrol officers were seen driving tactical vehicles (rantis) totaling six units. Meanwhile, personnel driving motorcycles were equipped with tear gas rifles.
It is known that protests have been erupting at several locations, rejecting the Rp50 million housing allowance per month for lawmakers.
Protesters have also been expressing disappointment over the performance of 580 lawmakers, whom they deem not representing public interests. The actions of the parliament members dancing and responding arrogantly to the public's criticism also culminated the week-long demonstrations.
The protests escalated when a motorcycle taxi driver was killed by a police vehicle on August 28. This incident angered Indonesian people and led to more public protests.
Subsequently, the police have stated that they will crack down on anyone deemed to be engaging in anarchist actions during the demonstrations. "Specifically for anarchist actions, the TNI (National Armed Forces) and the Police are asked to take firm actions in accordance with the law," said the Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo last Saturday.
Listyo has even ordered to shoot anyone attacking the Mobile Brigade Command Headquarters (Mako Brimob). "If they enter the dormitory, shoot them. You have rubber bullets, fire them," Listyo said in a video seen by Tempo.
