TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Manager of Public Relations for LRT Jabodebek, Mahendro Trang Bawono, stated that evacuating passengers by walking along the train tracks is the absolute last resort.
"Evacuation through the walkway is the last alternative step taken if the train cannot continue its journey," said Mahendro in a written message on Monday, October 27, 2025.
This statement was made in response to the passenger evacuation process that occurred after an LRT Jabodebek train experienced a disruption while serving passengers on Saturday, October 25, 2025. A video widely circulated on social media showed several passengers walking along the elevated track after their train had stalled mid-journey.
Mahendro explained that walking evacuation is only implemented if the train cannot proceed, and evacuation using a shuttle train is not possible.
He said the train stalled on Saturday, October 25, 2025, at around 8:41 a.m. At that time, the LRT Jabodebek protection system was activated, resulting in a power cut on the tracks as part of the automatic safety mechanism. "As a result, the LRT Jabodebek journey was temporarily halted," Mahendro explained.
Mahendro stated that field staff immediately coordinated with the Operations Control Center (OCC) to handle the situation according to emergency response procedures. After confirming that the power flow from the third rail was off and safe, the staff began evacuating passengers by walking to the nearest station with full assistance.
He ensured that the entire evacuation process was controlled and safe until all users arrived at the station safely. The power supply and the LRT Jabodebek journey returned to normal around 10:50 a.m.
In response to the incident, Mahendro stated that PT KAI (Kereta Api Indonesia) had conducted a comprehensive evaluation of the system and operational procedures, including electrical aspects, protection systems, and coordination between field and control center teams. Initial evaluation results indicated that the protection system functioned as intended, cutting off the power when potential disturbances were detected to prevent greater risks.
However, Mahendro stated that LRT Jabodebek would further investigate the specific cause of the active protection system to implement technical and monitoring system improvements.
As a mitigation measure, Mahendro said LRT Jabodebek has taken several steps to improve operational reliability, such as thorough inspection and testing of the protection and electrical systems.
Furthermore, LRT Jabodebek is committed to strengthening early monitoring and detection of potential disturbances and enhancing staff readiness through training and emergency response simulations. Mahendro concluded that LRT Jabodebek is committed to maintaining safety aspects in every operation and ensuring comprehensive improvements to make public services more reliable.
