TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The regency of Karawang in West Java was shaken again by an earthquake at 6:27 PM WIB (Indonesian Western Time) on Thursday, August 21, 2025. The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) recorded the quake with a magnitude of 3.1.
The head of the BMKG Regional Office II in Tangerang, Hartanto, stated that the epicenter of the earthquake was on land, at coordinates 6.49 degrees south latitude and 107.26 degrees east longitude. He said, "The point is 17 kilometers southeast of the center of Bekasi Regency," in a written statement after the incident.
The quake was relatively shallow, with a depth of 9 kilometers. According to Hartanto, it was triggered by activity along the West Java back-arc thrust fault, also known as the Baribis Fault.
The tremor was felt in the Karawang region on the intensity scale of II-III MMI. This means that it could cause light, hanging objects to sway. Or if strong, it could be felt inside houses as if a truck were passing by.
Hartanto confirmed that there have been no reports of building damage. He mentioned that this earthquake followed a magnitude 4.7 quake on Wednesday night, August 20, 2025. The earthquake had an impact on Bekasi and Karawang with an intensity scale of III-IV MMI. The tremors were felt as far as Purwakarta, Cikarang, Depok, Bandung, Jakarta, South Tangerang, East Bekasi, Tangerang, Pandeglang, Cianjur, Pelabuhanratu, and Lebak in Banten.
According to data from the West Java Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), the 4.7-magnitude earthquake damaged 45 buildings and residences in Karawang. About 104 people from 40 families were affected. A place of worship in the Regency of Bekasi was also reported to be damaged.
