TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A tectonic earthquake with a magnitude of 4.6 shook South Bengkulu, Bengkulu Province, on Wednesday afternoon, December 24, 2025. The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) confirmed that the tremor does not have the potential to trigger a tsunami.

Suaidi Ahadi, Head of the Padang Panjang Geophysics Station, reported that the earthquake occurred at 12:30 p.m. local time. The epicenter was located at sea at coordinates 4.46 degrees south latitude and 102.60 degrees east longitude. "The exact location is 34 kilometers west of South Bengkulu at a depth of 30 kilometers," Suaidi stated in a written statement.

Suaidi explained that the location and depth of the hypocenter indicate a shallow earthquake. The event was caused by subduction activity in Sumatra. So far, there have been no reports of building damage. BMKG monitoring as of 12:30 p.m. local time showed no recorded aftershock activity.

Residents in North and South Bengkulu felt the tremors with an intensity scale of II-III MMI. At this level, many people can feel the vibration inside their homes, often comparing it to a heavy truck passing by. There were also reports of light hanging objects swaying during the quake.

BMKG urges the public to remain calm and ignore unverified rumors. Residents are advised to follow official information only through verified BMKG communication channels.
