TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported a tectonic earthquake with a magnitude of 7.4 that shook the eastern coast of Kamchatka, Russia, on Saturday, September 13, 2025, at 09:37:55 Western Indonesian Time (WIB).
According to an updated analysis, the earthquake's epicenter was located at coordinates 53.104 N and 160.294 E, at a depth of 39.5 kilometers.
"Based on the epicenter's location and the hypocenter's depth, this was a shallow earthquake caused by subduction activity in the Kuril-Kamchatka Trench," said Daryono, the BMKG's Head of the Earthquake and Tsunami Center, in a statement on Saturday. "This earthquake has a thrust fault mechanism."
The agency's analysis also confirmed that the tremor does not have the potential to cause a tsunami in Indonesian coastal areas. Therefore, the public in Indonesia is advised to remain calm.
As of now, there have been no reports of building damage from the tectonic event. "BMKG will continue to monitor the impact of this earthquake and promptly inform stakeholders, the media, and the public," Daryono added.
As of 10:00 WIB on September 13, 2025, monitoring results showed no aftershocks.
