TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported a magnitude 5.5 tectonic earthquake that struck the West Southeast Maluku region in Maluku province on Wednesday, February 18, 2026.

The quake occurred at 09:15:28 AM Western Indonesia Time (WIB). According to BMKG’s updated analysis, the epicenter was located at sea at coordinates 6.02 degrees south latitude and 131.37 degrees east longitude, about 156 kilometers southwest of West Southeast Maluku, at a depth of 104 kilometers.

“Based on the epicenter’s location and the depth of the hypocenter, the earthquake was of moderate strength and was triggered by rock deformation activity within the Banda Sea Plate,” Rahmat Triyono, BMKG’s Acting Director for Earthquakes and Tsunamis, said in a statement on Wednesday.

He added that focal mechanism analysis showed the quake involved oblique normal fault movement.

BMKG’s shaking intensity map estimated the tremor was felt at III–IV on the Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) scale in West Southeast Maluku, meaning it was felt by many people indoors during the daytime.

There were no immediate reports of damage. Tsunami modeling indicated the earthquake had no potential to trigger a tsunami.

As of 09:40 AM WIB, BMKG monitoring had not detected any aftershocks.
