Maintaining Liver Health: 5 Tips to Protect Your Vital Organ

2 months ago 28

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The liver is one of the largest and most complex organs in the human body that performs various important functions to support life. With such a heavy workload, maintaining the liver's function optimally is crucial so that the entire body system can run smoothly.

Damage to the liver, such as that which occurs in cirrhosis or non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), can impede the function of this vital organ and trigger various serious health disorders. Therefore, it is important to start adopting daily habits that can support liver health.

As reported by Hopkins Medicine and WebMD, here are five tips that can be done to protect and care for the liver:

1. Reduce Alcohol Consumption

Excessive alcohol consumption is one of the main causes of liver damage. Although many believe that only individuals with heavy drinking habits are at risk of experiencing cirrhosis, the fact is that even moderate alcohol consumption, if done regularly, can cause long-term damage.

Alcohol damages liver cells and triggers inflammation and scar tissue formation. Limiting alcohol intake or even stopping it entirely is an important step in maintaining the structure and function of the liver.

2. Avoid Exposure to Toxic Substances and Chemicals

Various household products, pesticides, and other chemicals contain toxic substances that can burden and damage the liver function in the long run. Exposure to these substances can occur through contaminated food or direct contact with the skin and respiratory tract.

Therefore, it is important to wash fruits and vegetables before consumption, store chemicals safely, and always read the warning labels on cleaning products or pesticides. Reducing exposure to external toxins helps alleviate the liver's workload.

3. Preventing Hepatitis Virus Transmission

Hepatitis virus infections, especially hepatitis A, B, and C, can cause acute or chronic inflammation of the liver, which in the long run can develop into cirrhosis or liver cancer.

Prevention can be done in various ways as follows:

  • Vaccination: Vaccines are currently available for hepatitis A and B, and are highly recommended for individuals who have not been vaccinated.
  • Safe sexual behavior: Hepatitis B and C viruses can be transmitted through blood and body fluids, so practicing safe sexual intercourse can help reduce the risk of transmission.
  • Personal hygiene: Hepatitis A often spreads through contaminated food or water. Regular handwashing, especially before eating or after using the toilet, is an effective preventive measure.

4. Be Wise in Consuming Medications and Supplements

Many people consume over-the-counter drugs and supplements without considering their effects on the liver. However, the liver is responsible for metabolizing almost all drugs that enter the body. Overuse, improper combinations, or the consumption of certain herbal supplements can cause acute liver injury.

It is important to always follow the instructions for using medications, consult with healthcare professionals before using supplements, and avoid consuming products whose safety is unclear. Checking the composition and side effects of products can help prevent liver damage from hepatotoxic substances.

5. Maintain a Balanced Diet and Active Lifestyle

Unhealthy lifestyles, especially those that lead to obesity, are the main factors in the development of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Consuming high-fat foods, excessive sugar, and low fiber increases the risk of fat accumulation in the liver.

To prevent this, it is important to do the following:

  • Consume a balanced diet, including fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean protein, and healthy fats such as those from fish or nuts.
  • Engage in regular physical activity, such as walking, cycling, or light exercise for at least 30 minutes per day.
  • Avoid processed foods and sugary drinks, which can trigger liver fat accumulation and inflammation.
