TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM) has issued an apology after a live commentator mistakenly referred to Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto as Joko Widodo during his arrival at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) for the 47th ASEAN Summit on October 26, 2025.
“The Malaysian Broadcasting Department sincerely apologizes for the error made during the live broadcast on RTM in relation to the 47th ASEAN Summit and its related meetings at KLCC,” said RTM Director-General Suhaimi bin Sulaiman in a statement seen by Tempo on Sunday, October 26.
According to Suhaimi, an internal investigation confirmed that the commentator erroneously referred to Prabowo as Joko Widodo, while the current President of Indonesia is Prabowo Subianto.
“RTM takes this matter seriously and has taken appropriate action. RTM hereby extends its apologies to the President and the Government of the Republic of Indonesia, as well as to all parties affected by this mistake,” the statement read.
On behalf of RTM, he extended apologies to President Prabowo, the Indonesian government, and all parties affected by the mistake.
Suhaimi also pledged to strengthen editorial oversight and fact-checking procedures to ensure future broadcasts maintain accuracy and integrity.
President Prabowo arrived at KLCC at 08:20 local time and was personally greeted by Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim at the park entrance. The error occurred when the female RTM commentator, covering his arrival in a white sedan, misidentified him on air.
The 47th ASEAN Summit, themed “Inclusivity and Sustainability,” marked the formal acceptance of Timor-Leste as ASEAN’s 11th member.
In addition to signing the declaration for Timor-Leste’s membership, President Prabowo delivered remarks at both the plenary and evening retreat sessions. He was also scheduled to participate in related summits, including the ASEAN-Japan Summit, ASEAN-India Summit, and ASEAN-US Summit.
