TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Alphonsus Widjaja, the chair of the Indonesia Shopping Center Association (APPBI), dismissed rumors about looting of malls amid escalating demonstrations across the country. "Many reports about this are untrue, a hoax," said Alphonsus when contacted on Sunday, August 31, 2025.
Thus far, he said, his side has yet to receive reports about the looting of shopping centers. According to him, mall managements have asked the central government to assist in the security of shopping centers, to allow them to continue serving the Indonesian people, especially for essential supplies.
Shopping centers are striving to continue operating and prioritize the comfort and safety of mall visitors, he said. "Considering that some (shopping centers) are located in areas directly impacted by the demonstrations, the management will each weigh and take situational decisions," said Alphonsus.
Alphonsus explained that each shopping center may decide to continue business as usual or temporarily cease operations. Such decisions, he went on, will be adjusted to the local situation and conditions.
The APPBI chair also said the surge in shopping, especially for basic necessities, remains relatively under control. Alphonsus also asked the public not to worry because retailers are fully committed to serving the essential needs of the Indonesian citizens.
Over the past two days, there have been several looting incidents targeting lawmakers' residences. Overnight, a crowd of people damaged and looted various belongings in the luxurious homes of three DPR legislators, Ahmad Sahroni, Eko Patrio, and Uya Kuya, as well as the Minister of Finance, Sri Mulyani.
