Megawati Hangestri Departs Red Sparks Following Contract Rejection

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta — Megawati Hangestri is confirmed not to compete in the South Korean Women's Volleyball League (V-League) next season. She has turned down a new contract offer from her club, Red Sparks.

The news was reported on the Sport Seoul website, as cited from Naver, on Thursday, April 10, 2025. They quoted a statement from Red Sparks.

According to the media, Megawati rejected the contract renewal offer. She will return to her home country, Indonesia, to determine her next steps, but has decided not to play in the V-League.

Red Sparks coach Ko Hee-jin has taken the initial steps to continue the collaboration with Megawati. He has requested that this player be presented with a new contract, and the club has agreed. However, their offer went unanswered.

Megawati is said to have chosen to return to Indonesia. She plans to marry her boyfriend, Dio Novandra, a national finswimming athlete. She also decides to stay in her homeland due to her single mother's poor health.

Megawati became the best Asian quota player in the V-League. Last season, she scored 736 points with a 44 percent attacking success rate. This season, her performance has significantly improved. She scored 802 points with a 48 percent attacking success rate in the regular rounds.

Last season, Red Sparks were eliminated in the playoff semifinals. This season, they made it to the finals. In the final match, Megawati was the top scorer three times but had to see her team lose 2-3 against the Pink Spiders. She led the team by scoring 153 points in the first to fifth final matches.

Megawati Hangestri's presence also boosted Red Sparks' popularity in Indonesia. A large number of Indonesian fans also visited the Daejeon Chungmu Gymnasium to watch the matches. The club's social media followers also surged rapidly.

Coach Ko Hee-jin once praised this player, saying, "Mega is a name that will be remembered in the history of the V-League. He is a great player." For Coach Ko, Megawati was a player he wanted to keep, but they eventually parted ways after two years.
