TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Ministry of Immigration and Correction has canceled the launch of the new red and white Indonesian passport design, which was initially scheduled for the 80th Independence Day celebration on August 17, 2025.
The decision follows Presidential Instruction Number 1 of 2025 on budget efficiency across ministries and institutions.
“After a comprehensive evaluation, the Directorate General of Immigration has decided to postpone the implementation of the red and white passport design. This decision was made with full consideration and responsibility, involving various stakeholders,” said Acting Director General of Immigration Yuldi Yusman in an official statement on Thursday, July 17, 2025.
Yuldi explained that budget constraints require the Directorate General of Immigration to review its policy priorities. The decision also reflects input from the public and considers the current economic situation and the urgency of each policy.
“After the launch of the new passport design on August 17, 2024, the Directorate General of Immigration actively monitored public opinion regarding the policy,” he said.
According to Yuldi, from August 2024 to July 2025, the Directorate conducted a social media analysis across multiple platforms, collecting 1,642 sample posts. The findings showed that the public wants the government to focus on strengthening the core value of the Indonesian passport, particularly its global standing.
The analysis also revealed a public preference for service policies that deliver more tangible benefits and align with efficiency and priority-based public needs.
“With the current budget, the Directorate General of Immigration is committed to improving services and supervision by developing and maintaining digital-based systems,” said Yuldi.
He stressed that innovation is not limited to the passport’s physical design but also includes enhancing the effectiveness of systems and services.
“Postponing this policy does not mean we are abandoning efforts to strengthen the Indonesian passport,” he added.
Minister of Immigration and Correction Agus Andrianto also emphasized that innovation at the Directorate General of Immigration will continue, with a long-term focus on improving the Indonesian passport through enhanced digital security and more efficient services.
“We appreciate the public’s understanding and support during this adjustment,” said Agus.
