New Zealand Keen to Boost Agricultural Product Imports from Indonesia

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Minister of Agriculture Amran Sulaiman claimed New Zealand has agreed to boost imports of Indonesia's flagship commodities. "They are welcoming and willing to bolster our exports to New Zealand. This is a mutually beneficial cooperation amid the current unfavorable global trade conditions," Amran said in a written statement on Friday, August 8, 2025.

According to Amran, the import commitment was conveyed by the New Zealand Minister of Agriculture, Trade, Investment, and Forestry, Todd McClay, during the renewal of the memorandum of understanding (MoU) on agricultural cooperation between the two countries on Thursday, August 7, 2025.

The agreement, Amran said, has been inactive since 2017.

Through this cooperation, Indonesia and New Zealand have agreed to push for mutually beneficial partnerships and create a balance in trade between the two countries. Amran said he's striving to boost exports of several flagship commodities into New Zealand, including crude palm oil (CPO), coconut, rubber, cocoa, and coffee.

The cooperation, he went on, would serve as a strategic step to face global challenges and a concrete effort to bolster exports of Indonesian agricultural products, especially top ones such as CPO and coconut.

Based on data from the Ministry of Agriculture, the main agricultural commodity exports from Indonesia to New Zealand in 2024 were coconuts worth US$161 million, rubber US$35.9 million, other ornamental plants US$4.4 million, and palm oil US$3.2 million.

In addition to the import commitment, McClay said Indonesia and New Zealand would transfer technology in the agricultural sector to exchange ideas and innovation in support of Prabowo's food self-sufficiency target. Especially, he added, in providing meals for schoolchildren, referring to Indonesia's free nutritious meal program.

According to McClay, trade relations between Indonesia and New Zealand are progressing well enough and complement each other. He also hoped for a wider opportunity to cooperate to drive Indonesia's economic growth.
