Online Taxi Drivers to Disable App Today, Here is Grab's Anticipation Step

4 hours ago 4

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Chief of Public Affairs Grab Indonesia Tirza Munusamy responded to the planned protest and simultaneous application shutdown by online motorcycle taxi (ojol) drivers today, Tuesday, May 20, 2025.

According to Tirza, Grab Indonesia has no policy to obstruct the protest. She mentioned that every citizen has the right to express their opinions through demonstrations.

Grab Indonesia has also prepared several mitigations to avoid service disruptions due to the call for application shutdown, so that ojol customers can still receive their services. "We respect that right. We have made efforts to ensure that tomorrow the services and operations will continue to run as usual," said Tirza in a discussion agenda in Pakubuwono, South Jakarta, on Monday, May 19, 2025.

Tirza is aware that there will be delays and challenges due to the call for application shutdown. She apologized to Grab app users for the risk of delays when ordering ojol during the demonstration. "If there is a delay, there will be a notification. If it's canceled, it will be automatically reallocated," Tirza said.

As for the call for application shutdown, it was previously conveyed by the Chairperson of the Indonesian Transportation Workers Union (SPAI) Lily Pujiati. She said that the mass off bid throughout Indonesia is part of ojol drivers' protest regarding discriminatory treatment due to their partnership status. "Remove the partnership, establish it as permanent employment," said Lily in her written statement on Monday, May 19, 2025.

Aside from SPAI, the Chairperson of Garda Indonesia, Raden Igun Wicaksono, also instructed the simultaneous application shutdown on Tuesday, May 20, 2025. He apologized to the people of Jakarta and other affected areas due to this massive off bid activity.

According to Raden, direct street protests and mass application shutdowns will mainly be carried out in Jakarta, Surabaya, Bandung, Semarang, Solo, Palembang, Medan, Makassar, Balikpapan, Manado, and Ambon.

Raden stated that the action is expected to take place simultaneously in almost all cities in Indonesia. "We hope that the public understands this off bid action as a lesson for violative applications," he said.
