TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Week-long protests in Jakarta have resulted in numerous casualties, as chaotic situations are met with police violence.

The Street Paramedics Coalition has recorded at least hundreds of protesters who have become victims of police brutality during recent rallies. "At RSCM (Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital), there are already over 200 victims of violence (receiving treatments)," said coalition representative Joninda on Sunday, August 31, 2025.

Joninda revealed that the number of victims may be larger than the data collected, as paramedics remain struggling to seek an accurate count of casualties due to the ongoing chaotic conditions.

According to Joninda, some other victims are receiving treatment in other hospitals besides RSCM, which have yet to be accounted for.  "The data does not include victims who were admitted after late Friday," Joninda added.

Based on information gathered by Tempo, there have been at least 500 demonstrators who were taken to hospitals. The protesters were scattered in several hospitals ranging from Indonesian National Police (Polri) Hospital, Kramat 128 Hospital, Pelni Hospital, and Pertamina Central Hospital to Mintohardjo Naval Hospital.

Some protesters are still undergoing intensive treatment by medical teams. "At RSCM until last Saturday, there were still some being treated in the ER," said Joninda.

Joninda recounted that one of the injured demonstrators was initially trapped in the crowd when tear gas was fired by the police. The victim then fell and was trampled on and suffered from a tense neck.

In addition to the injured victims, the police violence also claimed the life of Affan Kurniawan, a ride-share driver who was run over and killed by a police mobile brigade vehicle on late Thursday, August 28, 2025.

Affan was taken to Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital before taking his last breath. After Affan's death, seven Brimob personnel from the Jakarta Metro Police underwent investigation.
