TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Iran's nuclear program has been set back for up to two years due to U.S. airstrikes, said Pentagon Spokesperson Sean Parnell on Wednesday, July 2. "We have degraded their program by one to two years, at least intel assessments inside the department assess that," Parnell told reporters, as quoted from Euronews.
The U.S. assessment of the damage to three key Iranian nuclear facilities remains "unchanged," Parnell said. He added that those locations have been "totally obliterated. "We believe that Iran's nuclear capability has been severely degraded, perhaps even their ambition to build a bomb," said Parnell, citing Anadolu.
He also mentioned that further assessments are ongoing.
The U.S. dropped six bunker-buster bombs on the Fordow nuclear facility on June 22 and launched dozens of submarine-based cruise missiles at two other locations in Natanz and Isfahan as part of the campaign against Iran's nuclear program.
The sixth round of talks between the U.S. and Iran was scheduled for June 15, but Israel launched an airstrike on Iran's military, nuclear, and civilian sites on June 13.
The 12-day conflict between Israel and Iran ended with a U.S.-brokered ceasefire that came into effect on June 24.
"The Department of Defense will support the diplomatic mission to continue that peace by ensuring that we maintain capability across the Middle East," Parnell stated.
President Donald Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth have various military options available to protect citizens, troops, and U.S. forces in the region, he said. "We don't have any force posture updates at this time in the CENTCOM AOR (area of responsibility)," he added.
When asked if Washington plans to continue reducing its presence in Syria, Parnell answered that the U.S. still has around 1,500 troops in Syria.
