TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy (PGE), a subsidiary of state-owned oil and gas firm Pertamina, and state-owned electricity firm PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN) are strengthening their collaboration in geothermal energy to support the national energy transition. The commitment was revealed during a meeting between the directors of the two state-owned enterprises while inspecting the Lahendong Geothermal Power Plant (PLTP) in North Sulawesi last Thursday.

PGE Director of Operations Andi Joko Nugroho explained that the two companies discussed the optimization of existing power plants, the development of new projects (greenfield), the expansion of existing projects (brownfield), and future strategic partnership opportunities.

"This is considering that PLN is the main off-taker of geothermal energy produced by PGE," said Andi Joko in a written statement on Wednesday, February 18, 2026.

Andi Joko referred to the development of the PLTP Lahendong in North Sulawesi. From that experience, he mentioned that similar potential could be expanded to other areas in Sulawesi and Sumatra.

In addition to discussing operational performance, the meeting covered technical documents for PLTP Lahendong units 7 and 8, the Steam Sales Purchase Agreement (PJBU) for PLTP Kotamobagu units I to IV, and the development plan for the Sungai Penuh Geothermal Working Area (WKP).

PLTP Lahendong has operated since 2001 and supports the electrical system in North Sulawesi. This power plant supplies 24 percent of the electricity needs in the region.

Andi hopes that the synergy between PGE and PLN can strengthen national energy resilience and accelerate the transition to clean energy. "We also want to ensure our role in supporting the Net Zero Emission target through the development of clean geothermal energy," he said.

Currently, PGE manages an installed geothermal capacity of 1,932 megawatts (MW), which is about 70 percent of the national geothermal capacity. Throughout 2024, geothermal electricity generation managed by the company reached 4,827 gigawatt-hours (GWh) and supplied electricity to more than two million households.
