TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo has commented on the tear gas fired at protesters at the Mako Brimob in Kwitang, Central Jakarta.
Initially silent when asked for a statement, Listyo later said he would investigate the incident. "We will check on that later," he stated briefly early Friday morning, August 29, 2025.
Demonstrators had gathered around Mako Brimob until the early morning hours. Around 1:30 a.m., police fired tear gas at the crowd, which had gathered on the east side of Mako Brimob near Pasar Senen.
According to Andi Kristiyanto, Chair of the National Ride-hailing Coalition, the protest by motorcycle taxi drivers was a response to the death of a colleague. The driver was tragically killed after being run over by a police tactical vehicle on Thursday night, August 28, 2025.
Andi stated that coalition members also went to Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital (RSCM) to visit the victim. "They demand that the police, especially Brimob, take responsibility," he said.
A resident of the Bendungan Hilir Flats II, Kevin, witnessed the incident firsthand. "There was a motorcycle taxi rider who fell and was hit. But the car did not stop; instead, it continued to move forward and crushed the victim," Kevin said on Thursday night, August 28, 2025.
Kevin recounted that authorities had initially detained protesters near the Pejompongan Gas Station. Around 7:25 p.m., a police tactical vehicle suddenly sped through the street without regard for the crowd. A video obtained by Tempo showed the vehicle continuing to drive even after the victim had fallen, with several protesters attempting to chase and stop it.
In addition to running over the driver, police also fired tear gas toward the nearby flats. "Residents on the tenth floor of the flats still smelled tear gas," Kevin added.
