TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Yogyakarta Regional Police is investigating the death of Rheza Sendy Pratama, a student at Amikom University, who reportedly died after officers beat him up during a riot on Sunday in the area of North Ring Road, near the headquarters of the Yogyakarta Regional Police.

"The Propam (Professional and Security Division) of Yogyakarta Regional Police has taken statements from ten witnesses and continues to gather information in order to uncover the truth about the incident," said the Head of Public Relations of the Yogyakarta Regional Police, Police Grand Commissioner Ihsan, on Tuesday, September 2, 2025.

This case has garnered widespread attention, especially on social media. A video allegedly showing Rheza lying unconscious and being carried by several officers has been circulating. Rheza's father, Yoyon Surono, found numerous bruises and wounds on Rheza's body when washing his son's body after his passing.

Ihsan stated that the probing of the witnesses is part of the process of delving deeper into the incident. However, he did not disclose the preliminary results of the questioning and the identity of those who were probed.

"The investigation is underway, and we will provide updates on its progress as a form of transparent and professional handling of the case," he said.

The Dr. Sardjito General Hospital also revealed the condition of Rheza Sendy Pratama when taken to the hospital by the Yogyakarta police health unit. The Legal and Public Relations Manager of Dr. Sardjito General Hospital, Banu Hermawan, disclosed that the student was already in critical condition and unconscious when he was brought in.

"The patient (Rheza) was admitted to the hospital at 06:30 a.m., in a critical condition. The medical team performed CPR, a 30-minute marathon of cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and at 07:06 a.m., we pronounced his death," said Banu at Dr. Sardjito General Hospital on Monday, September 1, 2025.

When asked about the physical condition that led to Rheza's passing, Banu admitted that they did not have specific details, as it falls under the purview of the medical team. In general, Rheza's condition was attributed to a cardiac arrest. Therefore, upon admission, he immediately underwent heart pumping.

Regarding the physical condition, Banu stated that the examination conducted adhered to legal procedures. "However, we cannot disclose the physical condition. The results of our examinations are still in our possession and will be handed over to the authorities," he said.

According to Banu, the family declined to have further autopsy performed on Rheza's body. "Hence, we uphold the diagnosis of cardiac arrest as the cause of death," he added.

Banu denied that there was external pressure not to disclose the findings of the examination of Rheza's condition. "We cannot disclose the entire results of the examination because there are legal aspects that we must respect," he said.
