Pope Francis's Funeral on April 26 to Draw Global Leaders to the Vatican

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The funeral of Pope Francis will be held at St. Peter's Basilica on Saturday morning, April 26, 2025, as confirmed by the Vatican on Tuesday, April 22, 2025.

Pope Francis, 88, passed away unexpectedly on Monday after suffering a stroke and heart attack, bringing an end to his papacy, during which he championed the poor and spoke out against the suffering of the people of Gaza under Israel's actions.

According to France24, the funeral ceremony will take place at 10:00 AM local time on Saturday in the square in front of St. Peter's Basilica.

Following the ceremony, the casket of the Argentine-born Pope will be carried inside the church, then transported to the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome for burial.

Pope Francis’s body will be moved to St. Peter's Basilica on Wednesday morning, April 23, 2025, at 09:00 AM. At present, his body rests in a casket in the chapel of the Santa Marta residence, where he lived throughout his 12-year papacy.

The funeral date was set following a meeting of the cardinals currently in Rome to plan the proceedings. It is expected to be attended by world leaders, ahead of next month’s conclave to elect the new head of the Roman Catholic Church.

Several world leaders have already confirmed their intention to attend the funeral, including U.S. President Donald Trump, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, French President Emmanuel Macron, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, and Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

In a break from tradition, Pope Francis revealed in his last will on Monday that he wishes to be buried in the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome, rather than in St. Peter's Basilica.

The cardinals’ meeting will also address the daily operations of the Church until the election of the new pope.
