TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Presidential Palace announced that President Prabowo Subianto has canceled his foreign visit to China to attend a military parade on September 3, 2025.
State Secretary Minister Prasetyo Hadi stated that the head of state has a number of invitations for foreign visits in September, including the annual United Nations General Assembly in New York, United States, and a military parade in China.
"President Prabowo Subianto, with humility and by apologizing to the Chinese government, has decided that he cannot attend the invitation from the Chinese government," said Prasetyo in a video statement to journalists on August 30, 2025.
Prasetyo revealed the reason for canceling the foreign visit to China due to the domestic situation dynamics. He said the President wants to continue monitoring and seeking a solution to calm the massive demonstrations in the country.
President Prabowo is one of the 26 heads of state and government invited by Chinese President Xi Jinping to attend the military parade in Beijing on September 3, 2025. The military parade aims to commemorate the 80th anniversary of China's victory in the people's war against Japanese aggression and the anti-fascist world war.
The parade in Beijing will feature a series of China's new generation armaments, such as fourth-generation tanks and aircraft, unmanned intelligence and counter-unmanned equipment, and advanced missiles including hypersonic anti-ship missiles. Most of this weaponry will make its public debut.
Former Indonesian Deputy Foreign Minister Dino Patti Djalal had also requested President Prabowo to cancel his visit to China amid the widespread demonstrations in various cities in Indonesia. Dino suggested that Prabowo be represented by Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono.
"Considering the still heated situation, the hearts of the people are in pain and anxious, I advise President @Prabowo to CANCEL the visit to China next week," said Dino on social media X, as quoted from Antara.
According to Dino, this is the right moment for a president to be in the homeland amidst the troubled people and the widening protest. "Going abroad now is not important," said Dino, who is also a former Indonesian ambassador to the United States.
Protests at the Indonesian House of Representatives building turned chaotic on Thursday afternoon, August 28, 2025. The situation escalated after an online motorcycle taxi driver named Affan Kurniawan, 21, was killed by a tactical Brimob vehicle on Pejompongan Street, Central Jakarta.
Affan's death triggered a new wave of demonstrations, especially among groups of students and online motorcycle taxi drivers. They held demonstrations in various cities in Indonesia such as Jakarta, Bandung, Yogyakarta, and Makassar.
On Friday night, Prabowo visited Affan's funeral home on Tayu Street, Menteng, Central Jakarta, to express his condolences. In front of Affan's family, Prabowo promised to uphold justice in Affan's case.
