TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), Bahlil Lahadalia, revealed that President Prabowo Subianto has tasked him with addressing illegal mining activities, particularly those occurring in forest areas.
The directive came during a meeting at the President’s residence in Hambalang, Bogor, on Wednesday evening, August 20, 2025.
Bahlil, who also serves as Chairman of the Downstream Task Force and Energy Resilience, explained that numerous mining operations are still being conducted without proper Mining Business Licenses (IUP).
“That means land arrangement, mine arrangement in forest areas. After being checked by the Task Force, there are mining activities carried out even though the IUP is not yet available, meaning illegal mining,” he said in an interview at his office in Central Jakarta on Friday, August 22, 2025.
The Golkar Party General Chairman emphasized that President Prabowo wants all mining operations to be properly regulated to preserve the environment and secure state revenue in accordance with Article 33 of the 1945 Constitution.
“The President wants everything to be well-organized. The goal is clear: to preserve the environment and ensure the country's revenue remains secure,” Bahlil said.
While he did not disclose specific follow-up measures or the exact locations of illegal mining, Bahlil highlighted the broader importance of the mining sector for Indonesia’s economy. He noted that the sector contributes roughly 15 percent of state revenue, making it a cornerstone of the nation’s financial stability.
“The ESDM sector is one of the mainstays of state revenue,” he said.

“This meeting is a joint step to strengthen the foundation of the national economy and ensure that the management of natural resources brings maximum benefits for the independence of the nation,” he wrote.
