TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia’s President Prabowo Subianto has ordered a thorough and transparent investigation into the fatal incident of an online motorcycle taxi (ojol) driver who was run over by a Mobile Brigade (Brimob) tactical vehicle of the Jakarta Police during a protest in Jakarta.
“I have instructed that last night’s incident be investigated thoroughly and transparently,” Prabowo said in a press statement broadcast on the Presidential Secretariat’s YouTube channel on Friday, August 29, 2025.
He stressed that severe sanctions must be imposed on any officers found to have violated regulations. “If any misconduct or violation is discovered, we will take the strongest legal action possible,” he said.
Prabowo admitted to closely monitoring the demonstrations near the Parliament Building in Jakarta, particularly on Thursday evening when violence escalated. He said he was shocked and disappointed by the officers’ actions, which led to the death of ojol driver Affan Kurniawan.
“On behalf of myself and the government, I extend my deepest condolences and sympathy over this tragedy,” he said.
The president also warned the public to remain vigilant against groups seeking to incite unrest. “I call on all Indonesians to be cautious of elements that thrive on anarchy and chaos. Do not allow them to succeed,” he urged.
Prabowo, who also chairs the Gerindra Party, vowed to listen to public concerns and pledged to prioritize national unity. “We will take note of every complaint. A chaotic situation benefits no one. Our nation is in the process of recovery, gathering its strength to build prosperity and overcome poverty and hunger,” he said.
Affan Kurniawan was killed when a Brimob tactical vehicle belonging to the Jakarta Metropolitan Police ran over him during the dispersal of a protest on Thursday, August 28, 2025, in the Bendungan Hilir II area of Central Jakarta.
National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo has apologized for the incident, saying it will be thoroughly evaluated within the institution.
“We will follow up on what happened. I apologize to the victim’s family and to the entire ojol community for this tragedy,” Sigit said outside the Central Jakarta's Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital mortuary early Friday.
