TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Former Indonesian Deputy Foreign Minister Dino Patti Djalal has called on President Prabowo Subianto to cancel his planned visit to China, citing the ongoing wave of protests across the country. Dino suggested that Foreign Minister Sugiono should represent Indonesia in Prabowo’s place.

“Considering the tense situation, the people’s grief, and their growing unrest, I urge President @Prabowo to CANCEL his visit to China next week,” Dino wrote on X, as quoted by Antara.

Dino argued that this is a critical moment for the president to remain at home with his people. “Traveling abroad right now is unnecessary,” said the former Indonesian Ambassador to the United States.

The demonstrations at the Parliament complex in Jakarta on Thursday night, August 28, 2025, turned violent after Affan Kurniawan, a 21-year-old online motorcycle taxi driver, was killed when he was run over by a Mobile Brigade armored vehicle on Jalan Pejompongan, Central Jakarta.

His death has since ignited a new wave of protests led by students and fellow drivers in several cities, including Jakarta, Bandung, Yogyakarta, and Makassar.

On Friday evening, President Prabowo visited Affan’s family home in Menteng, Central Jakarta, to offer condolences. He assured the family that justice would be served in the case of Affan’s death.

Prabowo is among 26 heads of state and government invited by Chinese President Xi Jinping to attend a military parade in Beijing on September 3, 2025. The event will mark the 80th anniversary of the victory in the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War.

The parade is expected to showcase an array of advanced weaponry, including fourth-generation tanks and aircraft, unmanned intelligence and counter-unmanned systems, as well as cutting-edge missiles such as hypersonic anti-ship models. Many of these armaments will be publicly displayed for the first time.
