TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung, accompanied by Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Arrmanatha Nasir, attended the opening session of the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) at the United Nations (UN) headquarters in New York on Monday, July 14, 2025.
Pramono's presence marked a significant milestone: it was the first time a Governor of Jakarta had been officially invited by the UN Headquarters to directly participate in shaping the global sustainable development agenda.
The HLPF forum is a strategic platform for world leaders, diplomats, and local government heads to discuss progress on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Jakarta's presence on this international stage signals recognition of the city's transformation into an inclusive, resilient, and sustainable global city.
During the forum, Pramono underscored the need for collaboration among cities and countries to tackle urbanization, the climate crisis, and social inequality.
"Jakarta is no longer just an administrative city; it must elevate to the status of a global city. So, it is crucial for us to actively engage in global diplomacy," Pramono said in a press release on Tuesday, July 15, 2025.
He highlighted Jakarta's ongoing initiatives, including its clean energy transition, the digitization of public services, and the strengthening of community-based green economy programs.
Pramono also explained that Jakarta's participation at the UN Headquarters aligns with its initiative as the ASEAN Hub, which promotes Jakarta's position as a center for cooperation and innovation within the ASEAN region.
"This effort reaffirms Jakarta's diplomatic role towards becoming a resilient and adaptive global city," he added.
Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Arrmanatha Nasir expressed support for Jakarta's participation in international forums. He noted that forums like the HLPF demonstrate that Indonesia's diplomacy extends beyond the central government, with regional leaders now gaining global recognition.
Arrmanatha further emphasized that the Jakarta Governor's participation strengthens Indonesia's commitment to prioritizing sustainable development and creates opportunities for other Indonesian cities to actively join global city networks and international platforms such as C40, UCLG, and ICLEI.
The HLPF 2025, themed "Advancing Sustainable, Inclusive and Evidence-Based Solutions for the 2030 Agenda with No One Left Behind," is taking place from July 14-23.
A total of 37 countries, including Indonesia, are scheduled to present their voluntary national reviews (VNRs), outlining their achievements, challenges, and best practices in implementing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) across various sectors and levels of government.
