TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Russian President Vladimir Putin is set to discuss Iran’s nuclear program with his Iranian counterpart, Masoud Pezeshkian, in China on Monday, September 1, 2025, as Tehran faces mounting pressure from Western powers.
According to Al Jazeera, the United Kingdom, France, and Germany have reimposed sanctions on Iran, citing the country’s failure to comply with the 2015 nuclear agreement, formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).
Moscow condemned the move, warning that the renewed sanctions could have “irreparable consequences.”
"We strongly urge them to reconsider and review their erroneous decisions before they lead to irreparable consequences and further tragedy," Russia’s foreign ministry said in a statement.
The ministry accused the UK, France, and Germany, collectively known as the E3, of undermining diplomatic efforts to resolve the nuclear dispute peacefully.
The Kremlin confirmed that Putin will meet Pezeshkian on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in Tianjin, China. Russia, as a permanent member of the UN Security Council and a party to the JCPOA, has opposed efforts to reinstate sanctions that were originally lifted in exchange for restrictions on Iran’s nuclear program.
On Thursday, the E3 formally informed the UN Security Council that they consider Iran to be in “significant non-compliance” with its commitments under the deal. Their foreign ministers triggered the so-called “snapback” mechanism, which sets a 30-day deadline to restore previously suspended sanctions.
Tehran has warned it will “respond appropriately” if the sanctions are enforced, cautioning that such measures could derail the longest-running diplomatic effort to contain its nuclear ambitions.
Over the past decade,Iran and Russia have deepened political, military, and economic ties, a partnership that has grown even stronger since Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine.
