A suspension bridge at a tourist spot in the Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region in Northwest China collapsed on Wednesday evening, August 6, 2025. A total of 29 people fell from the bridge; five of whom died, and 24 others were injured.

All the injured victims were rushed to a local hospital for treatment. It was reported that none of the injured were in life-threatening condition.

The accident occurred at 06:18 p.m. local time on Wednesday in Zhaosu County, Ili Kazak Autonomous Prefecture, Xinjiang. One of the suspension bridge cables snapped, causing the bridge deck to tilt.

An employee from the Xiata tourist area told Global Times on Thursday, August 7, 2025, that the area had been closed for safety inspection, and no further details about the accident location could be provided.

An emergency response and regional management bureau staff member from Zhaosu stated that rescue efforts were ongoing. The tourist area had been closed, and all tourists had been evacuated.

Top Adventure Hotspot in China

The Xiata tourist area is located in the Kirgiz Ethnic Township, Zhaosu County. The 65-square-kilometer area offers natural landscapes, including mountain trails, valleys, and rivers, as well as cultural heritage, such as ancient town ruins, according to information cited by Vn Express. In recent years, Xiata has been named one of the Top Ten Adventure Hotspots in China.

The suspended bridge with the snapped cable is the Jiangjun Bridge (General's Bridge) located within the tourist area. According to Jiemian News, a similar incident occurred on June 19, 2024, at the Jiangjun Bridge. At that time, the snapped cable caused severe tilting of the bridge deck.

Footage recorded by tourists and circulated on social media platforms showed that when the incident occurred, one of the bridge cables snapped, causing the bridge deck to tilt towards the broken side.

Eyewitness Account of a Tourist

A tourist surnamed Tong, who was at the scene of the incident, said the bridge was an important route to reach the scenic spot. The bridge had three sections, with pillars in between. As Tong and their tour group were walking on the middle section, suddenly the steel cable snapped, and the bridge collapsed. Some people fell into the river, others onto rocks, and some were trapped on the bridge. Three members of their group fell from the bridge. Tong was trapped on the bridge and did not suffer serious injuries. They and other stranded tourists were rescued around 07:20 p.m.

Local shepherds spontaneously rode horses to aid in the rescue, and the injured victims were later taken to the nearest clinic, as reported by Yangtze Evening News.

A tourist who claimed to be on the bridge when the accident occurred wrote on the Xiaohongshu social media platform that it was windy, and many adults and their children were shaking the bridge as they walked. This account was corroborated by other netizens.

Although the suspension bridge did not appear very high in the circulated video, the tourist mentioned that the rocks in the glacier area were sharp and could cause broken bones or sprained ankles. In addition, the river had fast-flowing water and was as cold as ice. Anyone falling into the river could suffer from hypothermia.
