TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian tennis star Janice Tjen has booked a spot in the main draw of the U.S. Open 2025 after defeating Japanese player Aoi Ito in the final qualifier on Friday night, August 22, 2025. Competing on the hardcourt of the USTA Billie Jean King Tennis Center, Janice successfully overpowered Ito, the third seed in the qualifying rounds, with a dominant victory of 6-1, 6-2.
Janice displayed a brilliant performance during her 49-minute victory, scoring four aces, four winners, and not committing a single unforced error. She saved five out of six break points, resulting in an 83 percent break point conversion rate.
The 23-year-old Jakarta-born tennis player shattered Ito's remarkable form. Previously, Ito had defeated the eighth-ranked player Jasmine Paolini and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in two WTA 1000 events in Montreal and Cincinnati.
This triumph in the final qualifying round also marks the end of Indonesia's long wait for a Grand Slam singles main draw since Angelique Widjaja at the U.S. Open 2004. Janice heads to the U.S. Open at her career-high ranking of 147th on the WTA. She achieved this success after being the runner-up in the ITF W75 Lexington and ITF W100 Landisville in Pennsylvania in consecutive weeks earlier this month.
Earlier, Janice embarked on an American tour as part of her preparation for the U.S. Open by participating in the ITF W100 Evansville. However, the bronze medalist in the women's doubles at the 2023 Asian Games, partnered with Aldila Sutjiadi, was eliminated in the quarterfinals.
Janice successfully entered the U.S. Open qualifying rounds after reaching the Top 200 WTA ranking. Her achievement was the result of her exceptional performance, which led her to be named the ITF Player of the Month for two consecutive months in May and June, including winning 42 unbeaten sets.
In May, Janice pursued titles in South Korea, clinching two ITF W35 titles in the Land of the Morning Calm. She elevated her performance in June by claiming four consecutive singles titles and three doubles during that month.
