TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - For more than two years, Andre Satria has driven an electric vehicle (EV) for his daily commute from his home in Pamulang, South Tangerang, Banten, to his office on Jalan Sudirman, Jakarta. The 35-year-old agency employee was drawn by government "incentives" for users of so-called "green vehicles." "It's exempt from the odd-even license plate restriction," Andre told Tempo on Thursday, December 18, 2025.
When he first considered buying an electric car, Andre weighed two main factors: price and value. The size of the discount during the 2022 promotional period became the primary consideration, followed by compact design, the availability of dealers and after-sales service, and ease of access to charging stations. His choice fell on the Wuling Air EV, produced by SAIC-GM-Wuling, an electric vehicle manufacturer based in Liuzhou, China.
Andre then compared the details of offerings from different brands and countries of origin. Chinese brands, he said, offered "slashed" pricing with more features, along with a wider range of designs and colors. By contrast, South Korean and Japanese products were priced higher. Japanese manufacturers, in particular, still relied largely on hybrid models.
He was willing to switch brands if a product became available at a more competitive price or with more complete features. Recently, he became interested in the BYD Atto, also made by a Chinese manufacturer. Andre said BYD offered larger capacity and more features at a relatively comparable price. His decision, however, was held back by the resale value of electric cars in the used-car market. "The secondhand price drops," he said. As a result, he planned to replace his car only after it was more than five years old.
