These Are Bosscha Observatory's Total Lunar Eclipse Reports in Indonesia

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Total Lunar Eclipse on September 7-8, 2025, was observed and broadcast live from Observatorium Bosscha in Lembang, West Bandung Regency, West Java, in coordination with a network of observation points across Indonesia.

Premana Premadi, an astronomy researcher at Observatorium Bosscha, explained that the collaborative network was established to ensure the eclipse could be witnessed despite potential cloud cover or rain.

"Can you believe that there was no clear sky throughout Indonesia?" Premadi told Tempo on Monday, September 8, 2025.

Observatorium Bosscha coordinated with 22 observation points in regions including Aceh, Kupang, Maumere, Malang, Yogyakarta, Jakarta, Lampung, and even Singapore. While most locations were able to observe the eclipse, Kupang experienced heavy rain that obstructed visibility. Some observers also reported seeing a large halo around the moon before the eclipse began.

“What’s fascinating about this collaborative observation is how local conditions create unique variations,” Premadi said.

At Observatorium Bosscha, thin clouds briefly shadowed the moon after the total eclipse phase. The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) had forecasted partly cloudy to overcast skies in Bandung during the event.

Photos and videos from across Indonesia and abroad confirmed the eclipse, showing the moon’s characteristic reddish glow, sometimes with red and white edges, Premadi added.

BMKG outlined seven stages of the eclipse. The penumbral phase began at 10:26 PM WIB, followed by the partial eclipse at 11:26 PM WIB on early Sunday, September 7.

The total eclipse occurred from 12:37 AM WIB, peaking at 01:11 WIB on Monday, September 8. The total phase ended at 01:53 AM WIB, with the partial eclipse concluding at 02:56 AM WIB, and the penumbral eclipse ending at 03:56 AM WIB.

The total eclipse lasted approximately 1 hour and 22 minutes, with the entire process spanning 5 hours and 26 minutes. Premadi noted that the lunar eclipse takes longer than a solar eclipse due to the distances and orbital speeds of the Earth and moon.

“During the total lunar eclipse, the Earth’s movement across the moon becomes more detailed and observable,” he explained.
