TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Startup Perplexity AI has officially become the provider of a new search engine technology on Truth Social, the social media platform owned by U.S. President Donald Trump. The service, called Truth Search AI, is already available on the web version, while its Beta model will be tested on the iOS and Android applications.
Trump Media & Technology Group (TMTG), the media entity formed by Trump, stated that Perplexity provides accurate and contextually pertinent direct answers, complete with transparent citations. "Which will help Truth Social exponentially increase the amount of information available to users," as announced by the management in a written statement quoted by TechCrunch on Thursday, August 7, 2025.
Trump Media assures that they will maintain control over the sources of information used by the AI search engine. The entity leverages the Perplexity Sonar API, a tool that claims to search for the latest, verified information from the web, including sites that block Perplexity's web crawlers. It also supports structured outputs based on users' preferred formats.
Perplexity Spokesperson Jesse Dwyer stated that the accuracy of the Sonar API will follow the sources restricted by Truth Social. "We have no visibility or control over that," Dwyer said. "Similar to you using the API inside of your own company or if you were an academic researcher and wanted to use it to search your own data."
The TechCrunch team delved into the functionality of this service with Trump Media, aiming to find out how Truth Search AI works, whether it will access the entire web, prioritize specific sources, solicit answers in favor of the current president and administration, or even those detrimental to the Democratic Party.
Axios, a digital news media outlet in the U.S., tested this search engine with questions like "What happened on January 6, 2021?" and "Why was Donald Trump impeached?" The results showed that FoxNews.com emerged as the primary source of answers, occasionally being the sole source. Other sources that appeared included FoxBusiness.com, The Washington Times, and Epoch Times. Conversely, the public Perplexity search engine displayed a wider variety of sources, such as Wikipedia, Reddit, YouTube, NPR, and Politico.
Trump Media's Chief Executive Officer, Devin Nunes, stated that Truth Social will refine and expand its search functions based on user feedback. "A wide range of additional enhancements to the platform."
According to Perplexity's Chief Business Officer, Dmitry Shevelenko, Perplexity AI provides answers with reference links that allow readers to further explore the topic. The launch of this service coincides with the issuance of the executive order by Trump at the end of July 2025, targeting "AI bias" or models considered ideologically non-neutral.
