Turkey Begins Extensive Restoration of Hagia Sophia Dome

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Turkey has commenced the first comprehensive restoration of the iconic Hagia Sophia's dome in Istanbul, starting on Monday, April 14, 2025. Culture and Tourism Minister Mehmet Nuri Ersoy announced on X (formerly Twitter) that the project aims to bolster the dome's earthquake resistance while preserving its original structure and decorations.

As reported by Antara, to ensure the seamless continuation of both religious services and restoration work, a massive steel platform, reaching 43.5 meters and erected over four main columns, will support the approximately 31-meter diameter and 56-meter high dome.

The Restoration of Hagia Sophia

This dome restoration is part of a broader 50-year project, initiated in 2023, focused on preserving this landmark building, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1985.

The multi-stage restoration is overseen by the General Directorate of Foundations of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. Previous phases included work on the tombs of Mehmet III, Selim II, and Murad III, as well as the Muvakkithane Sbyan Mektebi.

Restoration committee member Ahmet Gulec explained that the damaged lead coverings and cement materials require repair. He noted the difficulty of working from below due to the mosaics covering the dome's interior.

Dome Restoration

The exterior-focused restoration of the dome commenced with the careful removal of the lead and cement-based materials that were identified as the primary sources of damage. Structural anomalies within the lead dome covering had already been meticulously documented during the initial inspection phase.

Gulec emphasized the importance of preserving the dome's historical authenticity. "We will use materials and techniques consistent with the Ottoman-era construction to ensure the stability of the dome and maintain its original character," he explained.

Restoration Program

The comprehensive 50-year restoration program also includes repairs to the damaged northern and eastern facades. Steel pipe scaffolding and safety nets have been installed, and original cement plaster is being replaced with traditional Ottoman materials.

Additionally, the structurally weakened Beyazid II Tower has been reinforced using modern tensioners. Other towers, such as the Selim II Tower, have received external support to enhance their earthquake resistance.
