TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Executive Board of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) officially designated the Kebumen Geopark and Meratus Geopark as UNESCO Global Geoparks (UGGs) during the 221st session of the UNESCO Executive Board in Paris, France, held on April 2-17, 2025.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, 58 member states of the UNESCO Executive Board, including Indonesia, reached a consensus to approve 16 new Geopark proposals nominated by the UNESCO Global Geoparks Council at the UNESCO Geopark Council Meeting in September and December 2024.

The Foreign Affairs Ministry explained that the UNESCO Global Geoparks status held by these 12 Indonesian Geoparks signifies the responsibility to preserve, sustainably manage, and promote their geological and cultural wealth.

"This UNESCO status bears the responsibility to strengthen Indonesia's commitment to nature conservation, empower local communities, and global education, while also serving as tangible proof of Indonesia's contribution to safeguarding the universal heritage of the Earth," Kemlu stated in an official release on Tuesday, April 15, 2025.
