TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Legal Aid Foundation (YLBHI) has urged the Indonesian National Police (Polri) to swiftly solve the case of the acid attack on Commission for Missing Persons and Victims of Violence (KontraS) activist Andrie Yunus. Muhammad Isnur, YLBHI’s General Chairman, said KontraS and other organizations have maintained communication with police since the incident.

“Technically, there should be no obstacles for them to identify who the perpetrator is and who is behind the attack,” Isnur said during a press conference at the YLBHI building in Central Jakarta on Friday, March 13, 2026.

He questioned whether the police have the courage to pursue the case. “Are they willing to reveal the perpetrator and those behind it? This is not about capability, but about willingness,” he added.

Isnur also directly challenged National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo, Jakarta Metropolitan Police Chief Inspector General Asep Edi Suheri, and all officers to apply their investigative and scientific expertise to uncover the truth behind the attack.

According to Isnur, civil society groups are prepared to launch their own investigation due to what he described as the police’s slow response and possible cover-up.

“We also have evidence,” he said.

Andrie was attacked by two unidentified individuals riding a motorcycle on Talang Street, Central Jakarta, on Thursday night, March 12, 2026. KontraS Coordinator Dimas Bagus Arya said the assailants poured acid on the front of Andrie’s body, causing him to fall onto the street.

“The victim immediately cried out in pain, causing him to drop his motorcycle,” Dimas said on Friday.

The attack occurred after Andrie had finished recording a podcast titled Remilitarization and Judicial Review in Indonesia at the YLBHI office around 11:00 PM. He briefly stopped at a gas station in the Cikini area before continuing home on his motorcycle.

Around 11:37 PM, two suspected male assailants on a matic-style motorcycle approached him and threw a corrosive chemical solution onto his right side, including his eyes, face, chest, and hands.

Some of Andrie’s clothing melted from the acid. Medical examinations revealed severe burns covering 24 percent of his body. Residents rushed to his aid after hearing his cries. The attackers reportedly dropped a stainless steel container holding the acid while fleeing, allegedly heading toward Salemba Raya Street, Central Jakarta.

At the time of reporting, Andrie Yunus remains in intensive care at Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital (RSCM).
