TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Thirteen Japanese nationals were arrested by Bogor Immigration officers. They were apprehended in the Babakan Madang area of Bogor Regency, Indonesia, on suspicion of misusing their stay permits and engaging in online fraud.
The Head of the Bogor Class I Non-TPI Immigration Office, Ritus Ramadhana, stated that the dozen Japanese nationals were apprehended during an immigration surveillance operation in the Babakan Madang area of Bogor Regency on the evening of Monday, March 2, 2026. "They are suspected of being involved in online fraud," Ritus told reporters during a press conference on Wednesday, March 4, 2026.
Ritus explained that the operation stemmed from several days of intensive surveillance by the Immigration Intelligence and Enforcement Team (Inteldakim). Officers suspected illegal activity in a housing complex in the Sentul area involving several foreign nationals.
"During raids on three different homes, officers found 13 Japanese men," Ritus said.
A document inspection revealed that one of the foreign nationals was unable to produce an original passport when requested by officers. These foreign nationals are suspected of operating an online fraud scheme targeting victims in their home country, specifically Japanese citizens.
During the search, officers also confiscated several pieces of evidence supporting the suspicion of cybercrime activity. These items included items resembling Japanese police uniforms and identification badges; dozens of mobile phones and computers; signal boosters and jammers; and various other supporting electronic devices.
Ritus emphasized that this action demonstrates the immigration office's commitment to upholding the rule of law and regional security from the misuse of residence permits. "In this case, we took professional and measured action after a thorough monitoring process," Ritus said.
He also added that his office will not tolerate illegal activities by foreign nationals.
Separately, the Acting Director General of Immigration, Yuldi Yusman, stated that his office will investigate the actions of the Japanese nationals and will coordinate with the police and relevant government representatives if elements of a broader criminal offense are found. "The 13 Japanese citizens have now been taken to the Bogor Class I Non-TPI Immigration Office to undergo intensive examination," said Yuldi.
