Indonesia Assures Citizen Safety After Strong Venezuela Quake

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Three Indonesian citizens staying on the northern coast of Venezuela are safe, secure, and in good health after a strong 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck the region on Wednesday, June 24. This was confirmed by Foreign Ministry spokesperson in a statement on Thursday. 

"The Indonesian Embassy's office building in Caracas and the Ambassador's residence are in good condition, and all the staff are unharmed," she said.

The government has opened emergency communication channels to monitor the situation and ensure regular updates on the condition of Indonesian nationals there.

The Indonesian Embassy in Caracas also continues to monitor official information from the Venezuelan government on potential aftershocks and coastal hazards.

Yvonne urged all Indonesians in Venezuela to remain vigilant and follow the local authorities' instructions. In case of emergency, they are advised to contact the Caracas Embassy hotline at +58 4120217263 / +58 4122340100 or the Directorate of Indonesian Citizen Protection at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs hotline at +62 812-9007-0027.

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS) report, earthquakes with a magnitude of 7.2 and 7.5 have shaken Venezuela.

The first earthquake occurred at 06:04 p.m. local time and was centered near the city of San Felipe, approximately 280 kilometers west of the capital city of Caracas.

USGS reported a stronger aftershock shortly after the initial earthquake, with a magnitude of 7.5. The epicenter of the second earthquake was near the Yumare area, slightly farther north from the first tremor.
