TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Prosecution had demanded an 18 years prison sentence, a Rp1 billion fine, and Rp5.6 trillion in compensation against Minister of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology Nadiem Makarim in a corruption case regarding the procurement of Chromebooks.
Prior to reading out the charges, the prosecution cited several aggravating factors against Nadiem. "Before we present the criminal charges against the Defendant, allow us to present the considerations that led us to file the criminal charges," said prosecutor Roy Riady during the trial at the Central Jakarta District Court on Wednesday, May 13, 2026.
First, Nadiem is deemed to be unsupportive of the government's efforts to uphold corruption-free state management by allegedly committing the crimes charged against him.
The second factor is that Nadiem is accused of committing corruption in the strategic sector of education, which disrupted the quality and equality of education for Indonesian children.
Thirdly, prosecution is convinced that Nadiem has committed corrupt acts together with Ibrahim Arief, alias Ibam, Sri Wahyuningsih, Mulyatsyah, and Jurist Tan, which caused state losses amounting to Rp1.5 trillion.
Nadiem Makarim is also accused of causing state losses due to "unnecessary and ineffective" procurement of Chrome Device Management (CDM) amounting to US$44.054 million or approximately Rp621 billion (based on the lowest exchange rate between August 2020 and December 2022 of Rp14,105).
The fourth aggravating factor is related to the procurement of ICT Chromebooks in 2020-2022. Nadiem is accused of neglecting the quality of early childhood, primary, and secondary education in Indonesia for personal gain.
"As a result, the Defendant's wealth has increased disproportionately to their lawful income, amounting to Rp4,871,469,603,758 (Rp4.8 trillion)," the prosecutor stated.
The fifth aggravating factor, as read out by prosecution, is that "the Defendant has been evasive during the trial process."
Meanwhile, one mitigating factor in Nadiem's case is that he has no prior criminal record.
According to the prosecutor, Nadiem has violated Article 603 of the Corruption Law, in conjunction with Article 18 of Law No. 1 of 2023 regarding the Criminal Code, and Article 20 letter c of the same law.
