Wildfires have once again hit several areas in Indonesia, especially in Sumatra. The smoke generated by these wildfires poses a threat to the health of affected communities.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, smoke from forest fires contains fine particles (PM2.5) that are extremely small and can enter the lungs and even the bloodstream.
If inhaled continuously, this smoke can cause:
- Irritation to the eyes, nose, and throat.
- Coughing and shortness of breath.
- Asthma attacks.
- Heart problems.
- Respiratory infections.
- High risk for children, the elderly, pregnant women, and individuals with chronic diseases such as asthma or heart conditions.
Protecting Yourself from Wildfire Smoke Exposure
Here are simple yet important steps to protect yourself, and your family, from wildfire smoke exposure:
1. Stay Indoors
If the air quality worsens, do not go outside unless absolutely necessary. Close all doors and windows tightly to prevent smoke from entering your home.
2. Use N95 Masks
Use N95 or P100 masks that can filter out fine PM2.5 particles. Regular cloth masks or medical masks are not effective enough in filtering wildfire smoke. Ensure that the mask fits tightly and covers your nose and mouth properly.
3. Create a Clean Space at Home
Use the air conditioning in recirculate mode and avoid using candles, gas stoves, or smoking indoors. If possible, use an air purifier or create a simple air cleaning device with a fan and a filter.
4. Monitor the Air Quality Index (AQI)
Always check the Air Quality Index (AQI) from official websites such as BMKG or weather apps. If the AQI indicates 'Unhealthy' or worse conditions, take immediate protective measures.
5. Take Care of Your Health
Drink plenty of water, eat nutritious food, and avoid heavy physical activity. If you experience symptoms like shortness of breath, dizziness, or continuous coughing, seek medical attention at the nearest healthcare facility.
For individuals who must work outdoors, such as farmers or laborers, here are some safety tips when exposed to smoke:
- Wear N95 masks at all times.
- Take frequent rest in a smoke-free enclosed area.
- Limit outdoor work time when the AQI is unhealthy.
- If feeling dizzy or weak, seek a place with clean air immediately.
