TEMPO.CO, BandungThe Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported a total of 92 earthquakes in the West Java region throughout June 2025. According to Teguh Rahayu, Head of the BMKG Geophysics Station in Bandung, 82 of the quakes were categorized as shallow, occurring at depths less than 60 kilometers, while the remaining 10 were of medium depth, ranging between 60 and 300 kilometers.

"Seven of these earthquakes were felt by residents," Rahayu said on Tuesday, July 1, 2025.

The earthquakes varied in magnitude from 1.7 to 5. Based on the locations of their hypocenters, 53 occurred offshore, and 39 took place on land.

One of the tremors felt by the public happened late at night on Monday, June 9, 2025, in Pangandaran Regency. The magnitude 5 quake struck at 11:55 p.m. local time from a depth of 47 kilometers. Its epicenter was located in the southern sea, approximately 48 kilometers southeast of Pangandaran.

The shaking reached an intensity of III MMI in Pangandaran, where residents felt the tremor indoors, similar to the sensation of a heavy truck passing by.

In surrounding areas such as Cilacap, Banyumas, Kebumen, Tasikmalaya, and Garut, the intensity was measured at II to III MMI. At the time, the BMKG stated that the quake was triggered by active fault movement.

In response to public concern over the Lembang Fault following widespread rumors on social media, the BMKG Bandung office clarified the situation. Rahayu stated that the agency has deployed 33 seismographs throughout West Java to monitor seismic activity, including potential movements along the Lembang Fault.

“Six of these monitoring sensors are positioned around Lembang,” he said on June 21.
