TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Countries participating in the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) session will condemn Israel's violations of international law in the Gaza Strip. This was revealed by the newly appointed 80th UNGA President and former German Foreign Minister, Annalena Baerbock, on Saturday.
"Next week, there will be a conference on the two-state solution, where several countries will assert: they do not agree with violations of international law, such as the rejection of humanitarian aid to Gaza or attacks on civilian targets," Baerbock said in an interview with Deutschlandfunk radio station as quoted by Antara.
"The situation is far from over, but there are legal demands, and international pressure to ensure access to aid. It is important for us not to turn away from this issue and continue various efforts," she added.
When asked how the UN would mediate the situation where several Western countries recognize Palestine while Israel continues military actions in Gaza, Baerbock said that most countries have outlined the necessary steps.
These measures include a ceasefire, the release of all hostages, uninterrupted flow of humanitarian aid to Gaza, the removal of the Hamas movement from leadership in that area, recognition of Israel's right to exist by all countries in the region, and recognition of the Palestinian state, she added.
"This is an issue that has been discussed in the UN since its establishment - the right of the Palestinian people to determine their own fate," Baerbock said.
When asked to express her personal stance on the issue, Baerbock said that, as UNGA President, she cannot express her own opinion, but the majority opinion of the member countries.
"However, this is in line with my previous policy as foreign minister: the solution is only two states, with Israel and Palestine living in a state of peace," she said.
Germany, a key ally of Israel besides the United States, will not recognize the Palestinian state in the meeting. "We will not join this initiative," said Chancellor Friedrich Merz in August when Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney visited.
Earlier this week, citing an advisor to French President Emmanuel Macron who did not want to be named, media reported that ten more countries will recognize Palestine during a conference to be held on the sidelines of the UNGA session in New York on September 22.
The Palestinian state is recognized by 147 countries, including Russia. In 2024, the United States vetoed full membership for Palestine in the UN. Since 2024, ten countries have recognized Palestine, including Ireland, Norway, Spain, and Armenia.
