Australia Demands Independent Probe into Israel's Killing of Gaza Paramedics

Australia on Sunday called for an independent investigation into the killing of 15 medics and civil defense workers in Gaza by Israeli forces last month.

"The deaths of humanitarian workers in Gaza are unacceptable," said a spokesperson for the Australian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a statement as reported by Anadolu.

"There should be a thorough and independent investigation. Those responsible must be held accountable," the spokesperson added.

The demand came a day after a video released on Saturday by The New York Times revealed Israeli soldiers' lies about the killing of 15 Palestinian medics in southern Gaza on March 23.

The video was taken from the phone of a medic whose body was later found buried in a mass grave.

The video footage disclosed the initial claims by Israeli soldiers that the vehicles were moving forward "suspiciously" from their troops "without headlights, or emergency signals, (and) their movements were not coordinated beforehand."

The army claimed that nine members of Hamas and Islamic Jihad were killed in the attack.

Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong also told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation that the world is seeking "a proper and comprehensive investigation."

The bodies of eight medics from the Palestinian Red Crescent, six civil defense service workers in Gaza, and a UN official were found buried in a shallow mass grave near Tel al-Sultan outside Rafah on March 30 alongside the wreckage of their vehicles.

More than 50,600 Palestinians, mostly women and children, have been killed in Gaza in Israeli military attacks since October 2023.
